Wandering Glider (Pantala flavescens) (Fabricius, 1798) |
Pantala flavescens is the most widespread dragonfly in the world. It is found in Africa, Madagascar, southern Europe, the Middle East, Central, Eastern, and Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Americas, and many Pacific islands, including Hawaii and the Easter Island. This species is an obligate migrant often flying in large swarms. Individuals may travel for over 6,000 km; recorded at 6,200 m asl in the Himalayas. P. flavescens occurs at temporary wetlands, pools, paddy fields, and drainage ditches; occasionally breeds in permanent water. The abdomen is reddish-yellow in the males, and yellow in the females. The eyes are chestnut-red. Wandering Gliders feeds mainly on swarming insects, including mosquitoes, flying ants, and termites.
